Pepe Reina will leave Liverpool for good this summer, by activating a clause in his contract, according to the Daily Star.

The Spanish goalkeeper has spent the season on loan at Serie A giants Napoli, although it is understood the club inserted a clause that would allow him to leave for £4.2million last summer.

Anfield bosses are keen to let the 31-year-old leave for good so as to trim the clubs wage bill further.

Reina has two years left to run on his lucrative contract, having made 394 appearances since joining from Villarreal in the summer of 2005.

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez is understood to be keen to keep Reina at Napoli, and is aware the club are in the position to begin negotiations.

Benitez revealed: “He reads the game very well and is one of the best goalkeepers¬†in the world.

“Will he stay at Napoli? He has a clause and we know it – meanwhile he should continue to do well until the end of the season.”

Reina admitted whilst his future remains unclear, he is still technically a Liverpool player.

He said: “I have two years left on my contract.

“Liverpool got another goalkeeper [Simon Mignolet] and they told me they were happy to loan me for a season.

“It was strange but I don’t regret it. The only thing about the letter is that I just could say goodbye in a different way and I couldn’t do it [in person].”
