Liverpool winger Stewart Downing insists that the club have not given up hope of a top four finish.

The Reds are currently ten points adrift of Chelsea with ten games left to play, and have an outside chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Downing netted the Merseysiders’ opening goal during their 4-0 won over Wigan on Saturday, building on an impressive run of league results.

After some initial teething problems under new manager Brendan Rodgers, the Anfield outfit seem to be clicking into gear.

Although Liverpool have suffered some high profile defeats through the winter period, the six games in which they have been victorious have been confidant and assured.

4-0, 3-0, 3-0, 5-0, 5-0 and 4-0 wins have created a sense of optimism at the club, and Downing still believes they have a chance of breaking into the top four:

“I think it’s coming together. We’ve had some good results of late, we’re finishing teams off and defending ever so well.” He told Sky Sports.

“Pepe Reina made some great saves against Wigan and if we do our bit at the other end of the field, we’ve got a chance.

“It’s all coming together. We’ve got 10 games to go and we’ve got to keep winning games.”
