The main challenge that Liverpool will face should they fail to secure a top four spot this season, which looks likely, is trying to convince a player playing in the Champions League to drop back down to the Europa League (with participation for even that competition still in some doubt), believe in the club’s ‘project’ and stick around. A large part of that selling pitch will be the club’s style of play and brand of football under Rodgers. Should Suarez leave, they are unlikely to go for a burly, immobile powerhouse from the continent as their main attacking option as it simply stinks of a square peg in a round hole, so the more probing style of the one-time Arsenal target currently plying his trade at Atletico Madrid in Spain could suit the personnel surrounding him like Coutinho and Sturridge. His return of four goals all season remains a worry, but in a more fluid attack in a more open league, he could do well and would be available for under £15m.
