We should be beating teams like Southampton says Downing
Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has revealed his frustrations after his side’s 3-1 weekend defeat to Southampton.
The Reds have been in fine form since the turn of the year, playing themselves back into contention for a place in next season’s Champions League.
A victory last weekend at home to Tottenham sent them into the fixture at St Mary’s Stadium full of confidence, but they left empty handed after a below par performance.
Downing felt that Liverpool should have picked up maximum points against the relegation battlers and was unsatisfied with the display produced:
“If you can beat Tottenham at home, you should come here and win,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.
“If you want to be in the top four, you have to come to places like this and win.”
The ex-Aston Villa man put the result down to a poor start, but did praise the Saints for their resilience:
“It’s difficult with them being in a relegation fight and playing for the new manager as well. I still think we had chances in the game considering we didn’t play well. We started too late and the game was over.
“They are scrapping for their lives and, to be fair, they were the better team on the day. You’ve got to give them credit for that.”
Liverpool fell behind to early goals from Morgan Schneiderlin and Rickie Lambert, but Philippe Coutinho pulled one back ahead of half-time.
However, the Merseysiders failed to push on and Jay Rodriguez delivered the fatal blow with powerful run and finish.
