Manchester City are confident of landing Porto midfielder Fernando in this summer’s transfer window, according to the Mirror.

The Sky Blues failed when they attempted to sign the Brazilian in January, but looks to have made a breakthrough with a £20million bid during negotiations.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini also tried to sign team-mate Eliaquim Mangala during January for £40m, but seems to have switched his priority to Fernando.

The 26-year-old’s contract includes a £20m buy-out clause, which would make striking a deal easier for the Citizens.

Reports also suggest Fernando – nicknamed ‘The Octopus’ – is looking forward in playing in the Premier League after seven years with Porto.

He has yet to make it to Brazil’s senior team, and sees a stint in England as his best chance to do so.

City’s other Porto target, Mangala, would be a fine addition to Pellegrini’s defence, but comes with a hefty price tag.

With Joleon Lescott set to leave on a free and Micah Richards on the last year of his contract, Pellegrini will be short of defensive cover and could spend big for the Frenchman.
