Manchester City have been handed a blow in their pursuit of Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, according to the Metro.

Valdes is out of contract at the end of the summer, and has already revealed that he will be leaving the Camp Nou at the end of the season. But whilst the Spaniard had been linked with a move to the Etihad, a serious knee injury picked up in Barca’s victory over Celta Vigo on Wednesday night.┬áThe ‘keeper damaged┬áhis anterior cruciate ligament as he jumped to collect a loose ball and landed badly.

City were considering picking up Valdes as a free agent in the summer, but have now dropped their interest in the 32-year-old, with the ‘keeper set to spend the next six months on the treatment table. Valdes will miss the World Cup, as well as the majority of pre-season training depending on the league he moves to.

Valdes had been linked with a move to the Etihad after concerns early on in the season over the form of Joe Hart. The England shot-stopper was dropped by Manuel Pellegrini after making too many costly errors during games, with the Chilean turning to Costel Pantilimon instead. But suggestions of bringing in Valdes to threaten Hart’s spot at City have now been washed away because of the injury.
