Former Manchester City striker Niall Quinn believes that Manuel Pellegrini deserves to be named as manager of the season after guiding the club to the Premier League title.

The Chilean inherited a disharmonious dressing room upon replacing Roberto Mancini last summer, but completed a domestic double – he also secured the Capital One Cup earlier this year – with a 2-0 win against West Ham on Sunday.

Many have celebrated Brendan Rodgers – who took Liverpool to a last day battle for the title from a seventh placed finish last season – and Tony Pulis – who saved Crystal Palace from relegation after being parachuted in to replace Ian Holloway following a disastrous start to life in the Premier League – as the top bosses, but Quinn feels that Pellegrini deserves the plaudits:

“Pellegrini should win the Manager of the Season award, he’s had to do that job under such pressure.” He told talkSPORT.

“Man City now have the right man in charge. He’s brought something necessary to the dressing room. He’s been the antidote to the problems that were there.

“Man City imploded before he got the job. They had done very well the season before but it seemed a very hostile club last year.

“The dressing room was not a good place to be and, when the dressing isn’t right, you’re fighting an uphill battle.

“He’s made them all leave their egos to one side. He’s come in and brought them all together. Now it looks like he’ll take them on a journey for years to come.”

This season saw Pellegrini win his first major trophies in Europe after silverware-less spells at Villarreal, Malaga and Real Madrid following a glittering career in South America.
