Manchester City attacker Stevan Jovetic says that he rejected interest from Real Madrid to join the Sky Blues over the summer.

The Montenegrin ace made the switch from Fiorentina to the Etihad Stadium last year in a £22m deal.

His form in Serie A had made him one of the most feared forward’s in European football, and led to admiring glances from a wide range of other clubs.

Arsenal and Chelsea were credited with an interest in the 24-year-old, but Jovetic says that Real provided him with a genuine alternative to City:

“There was also Real Madrid, but I chose City,” he is quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“I decided to come here because this is a major project with many players. I should have come here the year before, but I had a nice season with (Vincenzo) Montella and Fiorentina.”

Despite having netted 40 goals in the purple of Fiorentina, Jovetic has made an underwhelming start to his time at City.

Injuries have seen the Eastern European ace spend the majority of the season so far out of Manuel Pellegrini’s XI, and have even led to speculation that he may be sold in six months’ time.

But Jovetic says that his problems are behind him and that he is ready to show his worth between now and the end of the campaign:

“These four to five months at the beginning were difficult because I was not playing.

“Then I often got injured, but now it is all behind me.

“I never doubted myself, even in the most difficult moments. I knew I could play in this team and now I have to prove it.”
