Willy Caballero is targeting Joe Hart’s No. 1 role after signing for Manchester City from Malaga.

The Argentine goalkeeper completed his £6m switch to the Etihad Stadium earlier today, where he will link up with former coach Manuel Pellegrini.

Caballero was a favourite of the Chilean boss during his time at the Anoeta, and he has now swooped to set up a reunion with the 32-year-old following the exit of Hart’s back-up man, Costel Pantilimon.

The new stopper was hailed as one of La Liga’s best during his time with Malaga, and now he says that he’s ready to gun down his team-mate to be a starter at City:

“I am very happy, and really looking forward to the start of pre-season and performing well to help the team.” He told the club’s official website.

“This is a new challenge and a new league for me. I have been doing well in the previous years and my goal is to go on and hopefully perform at the same level for City.

“I know I am coming to a big club with a very good goalkeeper. City already have a great goalkeeper in Joe Hart, but I will try and compete for the no.1 spot. I will do my best in the training sessions.”

Caballero’s arrival follows that of Bacary Sagna, who recently completed a Bosman switch from Arsenal.

City’s spending is unlikely to stop here, with Pellegrini understood to have close to £50m to use.
