Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz is set to finally end his Manchester City hell this summer by leaving the club on a free transfer, according to the Express.

Santa Cruz is set to return to his native South America to join Brazilian club Botafogo as his contract at the Etihad finally comes to an end.

The 31 year old striker arrived at City for a whopping £18million in 2009 from Blackburn Rovers but just 24 appearances and around £16million in wages later; he is set to leave the big spending club Premier League champions.

Santa Cruz must be seen as one of the biggest financial disasters in Premier League history and his once promising career has stuttered massively.

The Paraguayan has been on loan in Spain for the past few seasons, firstly with Real Betis and this season with Malaga who have enjoyed success in La Liga and the Champions League.

IF this is hell, sign me up. He was signed by a manager who overrated his ability and went to extraordinary lengths to sign him. He was injured when he arrived which is a big mistake, signing an injured player. When given his chance his lack of quality was there for everyone to see. He has been on a very good wage whilst doing very little to earn it.

Superlatives like “Ace” do not apply to Roque sick-note Santa Cruz. How is he in any way, shape or form an ace? What has he done in all his time at the Etihad? Santa Cruz is not top team material, barely championship, and only an idiot like Mark Hughes would consider buying him for an obscenely distorted price of around the £20 million mark, I wouldn’t have wanted him for free. From day 1 I knew he would be no good. In total this waste of time, space and cash has cost the club between £30-£40 million and that excludes the medical bills, says a lot for Mark Hughes’ business mind.
