Manchester City 'keeper Joe Hart

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is considering buying a new goalkeeper in January, according to the Daily Star.

The Chilean manager is looking to find some strong competition for England ‘keeper Joe Hart, who has been under pressure after recent mistakes.

Hart was scrutinised for his performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, after failing to deny Frank Ribery, Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben during Bayern’s convincing 3-1 win over City.

The former Shrewsbury shot stopper wasn’t strong enough to stop Romelu Lukaku’s effort on Saturday, but escaped some of the media’s attention as his side beat the Toffees 3-1.

But Pellegrini is interested in challenging Hart’s position in the starting lineup, and is drawing up a shortlist of goalkeeping options. Stoke’s £15m-rated Asmir Begovic, Real Madrid’s £20m Iker Casillas and Pellegrini’s former Malaga keeper Wilfredo Caballero, valued at £15m, are all on the Chilean’s radar.

English football fans will be desperate for Hart to be error-free during England’s two vital World Cup qualifiers this week, as the Three Lions look to win their group and secure their place in Rio for 2014.

But Hart, who has often been England’s best ‘keeper over the last few seasons, has started to become less secure, making blunders against Cardiff City earlier this season, and Scotland on international duty in August.

Do City need a top ‘keeper to push Joe Hart? Should the media be so critical of him days before 2 vital England matches?
