Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini says he never felt under threat despite rumours that Pep Guardiola was ready to replace him in the summer, the Independent reports.

The former Barcelona boss was widely tipped for a move to the Premier League after his announcement that he was ready to return to management next season, and many thought it would be Mancini’s job that he would take.

However Guardiola came to an agreement earlier this week to take over the reigns at German side Bayern Munich from the summer, putting an end to the speculation to which the City boss insists he was never worried about.

“I didn’t have any problem for this – I understand the newspapers should write that every manager wants to take this place because it is a good place,” he said.

“But I think we work very well here, I have a five-year contract and I think this is possible for five years.”

The Italian guided City to their first title in 44 years last summer but has struggled to deliver in the Champions League, being knocked out of the group stages in the last two campaigns.

Guardiola’s choice to go to Germany came as a surprise to many, however Mancini believes he made the right decision.

“Bayern Munich is one of the top clubs in the world for its history, like Barca. If he decides this it is because it is the best solution for him,” he added.

The Citizens’ boss will now be focussed on matters on the pitch as his side welcome Fulham to the Etihad this weekend, looking to close a seven point gap on league leaders Manchester United.
