Russian giants Zenit Saint-Petersburg are set to launch a January swoop for Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov, according to reports from the Daily Star.

The Serbian has struggled to live up to his billing as one of the very best left-sided defenders in Europe prior to arriving at the Etihad Stadium, and is believed to be keen to leave the club.

City themselves are also open to letting the 28-year-old move on, with Manuel Pellegrini confident that he could put the player’s £90,000-per-week salary to better use with a fresh addition to his squad.

Kolarov has just 18-months remaining on his current deal, which has alerted Zenit.

The Gazprom-backed outfit are hopeful that he can be lured to Russia, and are willing to match the Sky Blues’ £8m valuation of their man to complete a New Year move.

The left-back is also wanted in Italy – the country in which he developed his reputation with Lazio – with Inter Milan leading the race, while former manager Roberto Mancini is also reportedly keen to use some of his vast budget at Galatasaray to completed a deal.
