Manchester United and Tottenham are ready to fight it out for the signature of Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin in January, according to the Daily Express.

Reports in Italy suggest that Inter directors Piero Ausilio and Marco Branca flew to London yesterday, along with Guarin’s agent to hold meetings with both Manchester United and Tottenham over a potential January deal.

Inter are set to demand approximately £17million for the Colombian midfielder.

Chelsea were also understood to have shown an interest in Guarin, although it is understood they have now turned their attention to other targets.

Guarin is a player Andre Villas-Boas knows well, having worked with him during his time at Porto. The midfielder was instrumental as AVB’s Porto side won the treble in 2011.

Whilst Villas-Boas will be confident his personal relationship with the player will make Tottenham favourites for the deal, Manchester United have not ruled themselves out of the running, especially as they are desperate for midfield reinforcements.

Inter Milan have gone on record saying they will need to sell players before they can buy this January, meaning they are hoping to recoup as much as possible through the sale of 27-year-old Guarin.

The Serie A giants have been linked with Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko, and Southampton forward Pablo Osvaldo.
