Manchester United were close to signing German international Mesut Ozil just hours before he completed his move to Arsenal, according to the Daily Mail.

Ozil was offered to big clubs around Europe and United boss David Moyes thought long and hard about making a bid for the talented playmaker before deciding against it, claiming he wanted more a midfield general.

Moyes ended up signing Marouane Fellaini on transfer deadline day just an hour after Ozil was confirmed as a £42.2million Arsenal player.

Ozil is just one of a number of midfielders that Moyes missed out on in the summer and is something he will look to rectify in January.

The German international has impressed since arriving in North London and that will only frustrate United further as they have struggled to find any sort of form so far this season in the Premier League.

United even placed a deadline day enquiry for both Ozil and his former Real Madrid team mate Sami Khedira which were dismissed by the Spanish club.
