Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that he honoured to be compared to club icon Paul Scholes.

The current England international has been in fine form for the Premier League leaders so far this term, enjoying, arguably, his best season at Old Trafford to date.

His range of passing and composure on the ball have led to comparisons with veteran Scholes in recent times.

The ex-Tottenham and West Ham star revealed that he is happy to be mentioned in the same breath as his team-mate, and revealed that he has learnt much from him:

“Scholesy is a legend, so I don’t know whether it is tongue-in-cheek but it is a nice song and I will take that,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.

“It is always good to be compared to players like that. Paul is as good as it gets and has been throughout his career.

“To train alongside him and have the chance to learn every day has been something I have tried to make the most of.

“It has helped me bring my own game on whether he knows it or not and that has been a big help.”

Scholes has praised Carrick himself in the past, describing him as a “Rolls Royce” of a player.

The 31-year-old was pleased by the kind words, and believes that the mutual respect around the dressing room has been key in the club’s on-field success:

“It shows the respect there is within the squad for each other’s game,

“We all have different qualities and we all want to help each other to be successful.”

Carrick hasn’t always been a crowd favourite at old Trafford, with his sometimes languid style the target for abuse from some sections of the supporters.
