Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes that his old club will have to spend over £200m this summer or risk being left behind in the battle for supremacy in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult first season under the guidance of David Moyes, with Wednesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich having effectively ended their season with the title out of the question and a top four challenge looking unlikely.

Despite his struggles, the Scot is said to have a transfer budget of around £200m this summer, with the club’s board aware that fresh talent must be secured to replace a number of ageing stars.

Moyes has already been linked with a host of top names, and Bosnich – who represented United between 1989-1991 and 1999-2001 – thinks that it will take a vast spend to ensure that the current English champions do not get left behind:

“Man United will probably have to spend a little more than £200m,” he told talkSPORT.

“Money wise, Manchester United can afford to be out of the Champions League for a few years. Where they can’t afford to fall behind is in their ability to entice top players to the club.

“If you’re going to get the best players in the world to play for you, then some of them will take a little less [money] if they know they’re going to play in the Champions League. It’s the biggest level of football bar none, including the World Cup. That’s where it’s going to cost them.

“To entice those players you’re probably going to have to pay them a little more just because you’re not in the Champions League. You have to say, ’I know we’re not there this year, but if you come here then you can help us be in it the year after’.”
