Reading.

The Red Devils were frustrated by the visitors during the first-half, but Nani broke the deadlock with just over 20 minutes to play via a deflected strike.

Javier Hernandez doubled United’s advantage minutes later, before Jobi McAnuff pulled one back to set up a tense end to the game.

Fergie was delighted to confirm his side’s tie against Middlebrough in the next round after an exciting 90 minutes:

“It was a good Cup tie. It ended up a really good Cup tie when they got the goal and had a really good go at it.” he told Sky Sports.

“When they got the goal, they then got the ball in the box. We withstood that and I think when you analyse it, we played some great football and should have scored a lot of goals tonight.”

But, the Scot was slightly disappointed by his players’ lack of killer instinct in front of goal:

“We missed some chances but there were shots saved and I’m really satisfied with the quality of the game.

“A goal can change things and when we got it, we had to defend well. We really should have punished them better, though. At 2-0 you’re never comfortable.”

After a tough run of recent fixtures, a number of fringe players were given first-team opportunities.

One of these men was Hernandez, who marked his appearance with, what turned out to be, the winning goal.

Fergie was happy with the Mexican’s contribution, and his attitude both on and off of the pitch:

“15 goals he’s got us this season. The great thing about Chicharito is his energy and enthusiasm is fantastic.”
