Fergie to change formations for Braga clash
Sir Alex Ferguson has announced in the build-up to Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Braga, that he is considering a change in formation to play new signing Shinji Kagawa and hot prospect Tom Cleverley in more prominent positions. The United boss is set to play without wingers, despite it being his tactical trademark and a constant in the United formation since the Scot became manager in 1986.
Cleverley and Kagawa were rested for Man United’s Premier League match against Stoke at the weekend, but will return tonight against Braga as integral cogs in a new Diamond formation. The change in tactics should put both players in their natural positions that will allow them to play to their full potential. Ferguson also believes that being unpredictable will be a boost to United’s Champions League ambitions.
“If it turns out we play the diamond consistently, it would be revolutionary because it is going against our history” said Ferguson.
“But the level of the game in England and Europe now is so high that making yourself unpredictable is going to be a strength.
“Teams will have to think if we are going to use two out wide or the diamond, because we have players capable of doing both things.
“Kagawa and Cleverley can play really well in the type of game that a diamond offers, whilst in Nani, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia we have very good wide players.”
Last week Kagawa revealed he is not yet satisfied with his performances since moving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The 23-year-old told Japanese news agency Kyodo: “I don’t believe I have cemented my place yet. There is not one game that I can be satisfied with the way I played over the 90 minutes.
“I need to communicate better so I can get my timing right when asking for the ball and things like that. It is really tough but it was the same at Dortmund and once I get through it I think I can improve. ”
The Japanese midfielder will be hoping to continue United’s 100% Champions League record tonight against Braga at Old Trafford.
