New Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal has set his sights on the Premier League title in his debut season at Old Trafford, according to his Holland assistant, Patrick Kluivert.

The experienced Dutchman officially took over the reigns at the Theatre of Dreams recently following the end of his spell as the Oranje’s chief at the World Cup.

With the Red Devils having endured a difficult 2013/14 under David Moyes following the end of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, LVG is thought to be under much pressure to deliver, with missing out on Champions League football for next term likely to damage United’s finances.

Kluivert has worked closely with the 62-year-old since being named as his assistant in 2012, and says that his former boss is ready to push to win the title in his first campaign:

“He’s a great coach and I know he’s looking forward to taking over at Manchester United,” he told talkSPORT.

“It will be a difficult year but I know he can do it. He can work well with the squad.

“He’s absolutely going for the Premier League title. A club like Manchester United always has to go for the title and that’s what he wants in his first year.

“They also need to get back into the Champions League.”

Kluivert also believes that United’s fans will enjoy van Gaal’s playing style and approach:

“Van Gaal is a great tactician and he wants to win matches,” Kluivert continued. “He likes to play offensive and attractive football as well though. He won’t disappoint the Manchester United fans.”
