Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher wants to see Juan Mata used in a central role more often after he played a big part in the weekend win at West Ham.

The Spaniard became the Red Devils’ record signing in January when he arrived at Old Trafford from Chelsea in a £37.1m deal, and was widely seen as a the player to transform David Moyes’ ailing side.

But Mata has failed to set the world alight since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams, with his new manager having opted to field him a wide position.

At Chelsea the silky passer was utilised just off of the main striker, and won the club’s Player of the Season award two times in a row thanks to his top notch displays.

With Robin van Persie out injured, Moyes shuffled his options at Upton Park on Saturday, which saw Mata play in his natural role.

Fletcher was impressed with his team-mate, and believes that he has a major impact on the game in such an area:

“[Behind the forward] is Juan’s natural position, he likes playing in there.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“Some of Juan’s touches were fantastic. He pulled one out of the sky in the first half that was sublime.

“And with the likes of Wayne running in behind defenders, he’ll [Mata] always look to find him. We had great movement going forward and pace in the wide areas. People have been wanting to see that and it was there.”
