Big name arrivals such as Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria will boost Manchester United’s damaged confidence, according to assistant manager Ryan Giggs.

The Red Devils were English football’s top spenders over the summer, with a host of big name players having been drafted in under Louis van Gaal.

Such moves in the market were seen as necessary, with United having endured their worst season ever in the Premier League last term under David Moyes as they slipped from champions to seventh place.

The hangover from such a poor showing has been evident this season, with the club’s three league games having yielded just two points, while their Capital One Cup campaign came to an abrupt, and embarrassing, end with a 4-0 loss against the MK Dons – a League One side.

But Giggs is hopeful that Falcao, Di Maria, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo’s introductions will go some way to sorting out the problems at Old Trafford:

“Confidence is a problem.” He is quoted by the Daily Star. “It’s not easy at times, especially at Old Trafford where we’ve not performed really for over a year now.

“Funnily enough away from home there’s not been the same problem.

“We need to get that sorted as quickly as possible. When you see players of that ilk coming into the club it’s exciting.

“Whether you’re a player or a coach it gives you a buzz.

“You want to play with the best players and you certainly want to coach the best.”
