Manchester United are ready to offer much-maligned midfielder Tom Cleverley a new five-year contract, according to reports from Goal.

The England international has been the subject of much criticism from sections of the crowd at Old Trafford over the course of the past 18 months, with his below par showings last term frustrating many supporters.

A move away from United this summer was mooted following the £28m arrival of Ander Herrera, but Louis van Gaal is thought to be a big fan of the 25-year-old – whom he handed the captain’s armband during a pre-season friendly against Roma.

Everton were said to be looking at the playmaker, yet now the Red Devils are planning a fresh deal for Cleverley.

The club want to tie him down for another five years, with his potential a big factor in Van Gaal’s faith in his abilities.

Cleverly will also be given a pay rise to £55,000-per-week, putting his earnings more on a par with some senior squad members.

Such plans are understood to have no bearing on transfer business at United, with the club still trying to get big targets such as Arturo Vidal, Daley Blind and Juan Cuadrado in before the transfer window closes.
