Roma manager Rudi Garcia has told Manchester United to forget about signing Kevin Strootman this summer or in January.

The Dutch midfielder has emerged as one of Louis van Gaal’s top targets since his arrival at Old Trafford, with the former Oranje coach having made him a key member of his international set-up before switching to the Red Devils.

Despite the 24-year-old being out of action until the winter with a serious knee injury – which ruled him out of the World Cup – United have been linked with moves for his signature.

Talk of a summer switch has been deferred to one in January, with van Gaal known to be ready to bolster his central ranks.

However, Garcia says that Strootman will be staying at the Stadio Olimpcio for the coming season, and that a move has not been talked about:

“I have never discussed his departure and neither has he,” he is quoted by Goal.

“Strootman is a Roma player and he’ll stay with us this season.”

Strootman is understood to be making a good recover from his ACL injury, and could be back in action a couple of months into the new season.
