The Times.

The Welsh international became the most expensive footballer in history over the summer after completing his long-awaited move to Real Madrid from Tottenham for an eye-watering £85m.

However, his dream switch hasn’t got off to the best of starts, with injury curtailing his impact at the Bernabeu.

This has led to criticism of the move and questions of whether he is indeed good enough to be a Real icon.

This has alerted United, who are keen to take advantage of the situation if there are still signs of unrest at the end of the season.

The Red Devils are aware that a January move will almost certainly be rebuffed, but will monitor Bale for the remainder of the campaign ahead of a potential big money deal.

United rivalled Real for the 24-year-old during in the last transfer window, but were unable to convince him to turn down a move to Spain.

However, they are confident that they can lure him back to England if his dream switch turns into a nightmare.

Could Gareth Bale really make a sensational Premier League return?
