Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole believes that Robin van Persie is not the best candidate to be the club’s new captain.

The Red Devils are currently without a skipper after letting Nemanja Vidic leave to join Inter Milan on a free transfer, and with other experienced names having also exited new boss Louis van Gaal will have to make a big decision when he makes his switch to Old Trafford proper after the World Cup.

With van Persie one of the coach’s stars in the Holland team, there has been much speculation suggesting that United’s XI will be set-up to get the best from the forward next season.

Some have even said that the ex-Arsenal man – who arrived at the Theatre of Dreams just two years ago – will be handed the armband ahead of long-term favourite Wayne Rooney, and Cole feels that doing so could be the wrong decision:

“Robin has only been at the football club for two years,” he is quoted by The Express.

“Some players have been there for 10 years, a part of Manchester United’s history.”

“I don’t know [who should be captain].

“I mean I’ve played at United for years and we’ve always had a captain. We always knew who would be captain.

“But looking at the united team now, Wayne [Rooney] has done it a few times.”
