Manchester United legend tells Rooney to snub transfer
Cole was lacking first-team football when the Reds signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy and set sail to Blackburn Rovers, but has admitted that he ultimately regretted the decision.
“I look back on what happened to me and, if I had not been so headstrong and stubborn, I could have stayed at United,” Cole told The Daily Mail.
“I look back on it in hindsight and I think to myself, ‘I should have stayed’.”
Rooney is experiencing a similar situation with the arrival of Robin van Persie, who has became the focal point of United’s attack.
The 2009-10 PFA and WFA Player of the Year was left out of the starting XI in the Champions League clash against Real Madrid, and speculations over his future at the club have arisen since then.
But Cole believes Rooney will still play plenty of big games with United.
“He has a lot more games in him here and he will score numerous amounts of goals here as well,” he added.
“I cannot see it being a problem. Everyone has been left out of big games and then come back the week after.
“The manager leaves big players out of big matches. It has happened down the years. It’s part and parcel of being at a club like United.”
