Everton are bracing themselves for an improved bid from Manchester United for England full back Leighton Baines according to The Guardian.

David Moyes is determined to make his former player his first new signing since taking over as Manchester United manager, and has already seen a £12million bid flatly rejected by his former chairman Bill Kenwright.

There has been no contact between the two clubs since the initial bid, although it is understood United are poised to make an improved offer, one however that is expected to be way below Everton’s £20million valuation of the player.

Everton’s new manager Roberto Martinez is desperate to keep hold of Baines, and has the backing of his chairman to offer him an improved contract at Goodison Park. The 28-year-old has two years remaining on his current deal.

Moyes refused to be drawn on transfer matters yesterday at the announcement of United’s new £8m-a-year partnership with the Russian airline Aeroflot at Old Trafford.

Martinez meanwhile yesterday completed his first signing since taking over at Goodison Park, in the form of striker Arouna Kone from Wigan for a fee of £5million.

Kone shone under Martinez at the DW Stadium last season, scoring 13 goals for the relegated side and playing a key part in their shock FA Cup triumph.
