Chris Smalling has given a frank assessment of Manchester United’s performances this season, claiming they must begin to do better if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League, reports the Daily Mirror.

United slipped to another Premier League defeat at the weekend, losing 2-1 to Stoke at the Britannia.

The result leaves them seventh in the table on 40 points, with just 14 games of the season remaining.

Over the last decade a team has needed just over 68 points on average to finish fourth, while Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes a total of 71 points is required to claim a top four place.

That currently looks a big ask for David Moyes and his side, who have already suffered eight league defeats this season.

“We need to win all our games,” Smalling said.

“We’re the ones who have to catch the others so we’ve got to win the points and put the pressure on them.

“We’ve not done ourselves any favours with losses like this. We’re not in those positions at the moment and that’s a worry, but there is plenty of football left.

“There’s a lot to go, but time is running out and we need to make sure we put things right come the next game.

“Each point that we drop makes it difficult for ourselves. Other teams will drop points as well, but we need to stop dropping points. We need to put pressure on other teams.”
