United's Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has told Manchester United manager David Moyes that he wants to leave the club, according to The Express.

The England forward will then confirm his desire to leave the Premier League champions with a written transfer request this week.

This has put Chelsea on alert, prompting an improved £30million offer from the Blues. Rooney has told Moyes that he wants a fresh challenge, and has also ruled out a move abroad, as he is keen to join Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. The Blues had a £20m bid for Rooney rejected last month.

Rooney’s written transfer request will challenge Manchester United’s stance on selling players to their rivals, with the club adamant they will not sell their star forward to another title-challenging side in England.

The striker grew increasingly unhappy at the club last season under Sir Alex Ferguson, who made Robin van Persie the club’s top striker instead of Rooney. The forward is also likely to face a tough reaction from the fans, who could see Rooney in his first Old Trafford appearance of the new season in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial game against Sevilla on Friday evening.

His transfer request is set to be Moyes’ biggest test since leaving Everton, as he will look to find a replacement for Rooney before sanctioning any deal, should United chiefs accept a Chelsea bid.
