Manchester United could axe Alexander Buttner in January amid interest in the full-back from Italian sides, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Dutch defender joined the Red Devils from Vitesse Arnhem last year, but has struggled to make any sort of impact at Old Trafford under both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

However, Roma and Genoa are both keen on Buttner, and are plotting Wpinter moves for his services.

The Serie A pair are keen to explore a loan option for the 24-year-old, which could then be made permanent at the end of the season.

Even with Patrice Evra edging towards the exit door, United may opt to accept such a deal with a swoop for Leighton Baines a priority.

The Everton star was linked with a move to the Premier League champions over the summer, but the Merseyside club held firm to keep him from the grasp of their former manager.

Southampton’s Luke Shaw is also an option, and if either player were to be signed in January Buttner’s chances of playing time would be reduced further.
