The Mirror.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to have made defensive acquisitions his main goal for the summer, after watching his side concede a whopping 31 league goals already, just six fewer than bottom of the table QPR.

With Rio Ferdinand’s career winding down, the Scot is believed to have his eye on a commanding centre-half to replace the former Leeds man.

Garay is thought to fit the bill, but Fergie is reportedly planning a series of scouting missions in the coming months to establish whether or not he is the right candidate.

Although he has been impressive for Benfica, there are doubts as to whether Garay can perform at the very highest level, having endured a tough spell with Real Madrid prior to joining the Lisbon side.

If the 26-year-old does pass United’s inspection, a deal could be difficult to conclude, with third-party ownership an issue, as well as a reported sell-on clause between Benfica and Real.

Garay, a full Argentinian international, was thought of as one of the finest talents in La Liga during his time with Racing Santander.

This tempted Real to swoop for his signature, but he was unable to hold down a regular starting sport at the Bernabeu.

As a result he was sold to Benfica in 2011, where he has rebuilt his reputation as a top class centre-back.

As a united fan and benfica supporter, he will be a great addition to the team. Fergie really needs to strengthen the defence. Garay will be certainly up there for the job!
