Manchester United would have to submit a “very good offer” in order to have a chance of bringing Borussia Dortmund hitman Robert Lewandowski to the Premier League, the Daily Mirror reports.

Their main rivals to acquiring the striker, Bayern Munich, could have reached an unofficial agreement with Dortmund to sign the star on a free transfer in 2014, providing that the Polish international stayed for one more season at the Westfalenstadion, but United are hoping to scupper the deal.

The proposal, reportedly accepted by Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke, may not however materialise if the current Bundesliga champions received an outstanding offer this summer.

“I would prefer to keep Robert for another year and then lose him for nothing than accept a sum that is below his market value this summer. Certainly, it would take a very good offer for us to part with him before his contract finishes,” Watzke said.

The Red Devils could be able to make a bid should the rumours surrounding Wayne Rooney be true and the striker is sold, however,  Ferguson has guaranteed the Englishman will stay at Old Trafford next season meaning the club might have to switch focus to a more affordable target.

With both Premier League and Bundesliga leaders competing for Lewandowski, the striker’s words indicate his future could be closer to the Allianz Arena at this stage.

“I would have no problem playing in Dortmund for one more year after this. That would not be difficult for me,” the Polish hitman revealed.
