Manchester United have made it clear they will not allow star striker Robin Van Persie to leave the club in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The Dutch striker has endured a tough season at Old Trafford, struggling with injury and to adapt to life under new manager David Moyes.

He hinted at his unhappiness following Tuesday’s shock defeat to Olympiakos, claiming his teammates often occupy spaces he likes to play in.

However, United boss David Moyes and the club’s board are determined to ensure van Persie and Wayne Rooney lead the attack next season, and will resist any attempts to lure the Dutchman away.

Speaking to Dutch TV station NOS on Tuesday, Van Persie said: “Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in, and when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well. So that forces me to adjust my runs.

“Unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame.”

His comments drew criticism from former Arsenal and Wales striker John Hartson, who claimed he would never have been allowed to have made such comments under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Sir Alex would have pulled him aside and said, “This is a joke, going to a Dutch reporter and slaughtering your team-mates like that,” Hartson said.

“For me, that shows there are cracks in the team. It’s poor from van Persie.”
