Manchester United look set to lose Wayne Rooney, even if the pull off an ambitious deal to land Chelsea’s Juan Mata, according to reports from The Sun.

The England international has just entered the final 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford, and negotiations regarding an extension have been fruitless thus far.

Rooney was linked with a move away from the Red Devils over the summer after declaring himself to be unhappy at the club following a series of high-profile first-team exclusions.

However United held firm to keep their man, with David Moyes having made him a key member of his starting XI since taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Despite this, speculation surrounding the ex-Everton youth star hasn’t gone away, with Chelsea rumoured to be particularly interested.

It was thought that a deal for Mata – which is said to be possible – could persuade him to stay, but now it appears that he will once again chase and end of season exit.

Real Madrid are said to be watching the situation, while Chelsea could reignite their pursuit.

In six months’ time Rooney will be in the last year of his contract, which will see his value decrease massively.
