Juan Mata has backed his Manchester United team-mates to get past Bayern Munich and make it to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

The Red Devils will travel to the Allianz Arena level with the reigning European champions after a hard fought 1-1 draw at home last week.

Although few had given David Moyes’ men much of a chance in their tie with Bayern, they now know that a single goal win in Bavaria will give them an unexpected route into the last four.

Mata – who is ineligible to feature having represented Chelsea in the competition before his January move to Old Trafford – says that confidence is high in the United camp, and that he believes they can get a win in Germany:

“This victory (against Newcastle) gives us a lot of energy for our game in Munich on Wednesday. In the first leg, the support from Old Trafford was our power to cope with such a tough game. It was a great night that I had to enjoy from the stands.” He wrote in his blog for the official Manchester United website.

“On Wednesday I’ll be supporting from home, in front of the TV, aware that the Allianz Arena is one of the toughest stadiums in Europe… but also aware that we are Manchester United and I’m sure we can make it through!”

United can take further heart from Bayern’s shock weekend loss to lowly Augsburg which ended a 53-game unbeaten run.
