Ex-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes that new signings Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera are not of the same “quality” as former target Toni Kroos.

The Red Devils tracked the German international for much of the back end of last season, with some rumours having suggested that personal terms were all but agreed with the silky playmaker.

But now United appear to have lost out on the Bayern Munich star, who looks set to join Real Madrid in a cut-price move – his contract expires in just 12 months’ time.

Since then Louis van Gaal has recovered from the set-back to snap up Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw for a combined £60m, which has been met with positivity from many involved at the club after the failures of David Moyes in the transfer market last year.

But Scholes believes that neither player is of the same ilk as Kroos, who he wishes was preparing to play at Old Trafford in 2014/15:

“I love watching Toni Kroos. I think he’s brilliant,” he wrote in his column for Paddy Power.

“I love the way he controls the ball and controls games. He can really play a pass and has superb vision. Kroos is capable of scoring goals too, from outside the box on either foot.

“I just wish Manchester United had signed him. Yes, it is good to see United bringing in new players, but they haven’t signed anything like the quality of Kroos.”
