Ryan Giggs believes that Juan Mata can go on to establish himself as one of Manchester United’s true greats following his arrival from Chelsea.

The Spaniard completed a shock move to Old Trafford from Stamford Bridge in a club record £37.1m deal last month.

Despite the Red Devils’ weekend slip-up at Stoke, Mata has looked impressive in his opening few performances for David Moyes, and is already being talked about as a player who could become the focal point of the team.

Giggs – a player who has won just about every prize on offer with United – feels that the playmaker has the all of the abilities and characteristics to become one of the club’s iconic players:

“I think he could be,” he is quoted by The Express.

“He’s obviously got the talent.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I don’t see why not.”

United have endured a difficult opening half of the season under Moyes, with results leaving them out of the title race and some way off of a top four finish.

Giggs says that the arrival of Mata has come at the right time and is a real boost to the whole squad:

“The players are just like the fans,

“When they see a quality player come through the door, it gives them that excitement and you feel it around training. It gives everybody a lift.

“We’ve played against him for the last three years and know the quality he has got. He’s fitted in straight away and speaks really good English – better English than most of the lads!”
