Sir Alex Ferguson May Block Return
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has cast doubt over Rio Ferdinand’s return to the England side due to a strict training routine.
Ferdinand was surprisingly recalled into the England set up just months after Roy Hodgson appeared to have ended the 34 year olds international career.
Hodgson selected John Terry over Ferdinand amidst Terry’s court case for racial abuse of brother Anton Ferdinand.
The rather embarrassing U-turn may be halted however as Ferguson will wait to see if Ferdinand is in the right shape to go off with England for two crucial World Cup Qualifiers against Montenegro and San Marino.
The United boss claimed he was surprised to see Ferdinand involved in the squad and that the defenders special training regime has kept him fit for the past few years.
Ferguson will decide if Ferdinand joins the squad after United’s clash with relegation threatened Reading on Saturday evening.
“I was as surprised as anyone when I heard,” Ferguson told talkSPORT.
“I need to speak to the [United] doctor because we prepare Rio Ferdinand in a certain way and there are certain treatments he has to go through.
“He has to make sure he is going to be OK in terms of the number of games he plays.
“We have been doing that for two years and it has worked. We have to look at all these things before Rio decides [if he joins up].”
