The January window has come to a close and as usual it didn’t quite live up to it’s billing. Manchester United‘s apparent mid-season transfer revolution, supported by a rumoured £200million war chest at David Moyes’ disposal, began and ended in the single purchase of Chelsea’s Juan Mata for a £37million fee.

The next few weeks will be filled with Premier League gaffers justifying their refusal to spend this January, bringing out the old adages of ‘there’s just no one to buy’, ‘the prices were too much of a risk’ and ‘all of our targets were cup-tied’.
