Ezequiel Garay is a towering Argentinian centre-back measuring at six foot four. After some impressive spells at Racing Santander, and a rather mediocre term at Real Madrid, Garay has become a leading figure in the Benfica defence, whom he joined in 2011.
He’s reportedly already on Fergie’s shortlist, but the United scouts are waiting for further evidence of whether the 26-year-old can hack it at the top level considering he recently failed to make the grade at the Bernabeu.
From a financial perspective, Benfica are being pushed to sell their star defender as they can’t afford his wage demands, meaning he could be available in the summer for a reduced sum.
However, Real Madrid are entitled to 50% of any future transfer fees, so any offer would still need to leave a worthwhile profit for the Portuguese giants.
