Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confessed that finishing in the top four is his aim for this season, despite a title push having been discussed before the big kick-off.

The Red Devils endured a woeful campaign under David Moyes last term, as they slipped from champions to a side that is not in any form of European competition on the back of a seventh placed finish.

This season has not started well for United either, with Van Gaal’s men having only picked up one point from their opening two games and crashed out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of the MK Dons.

Even with the disastrous opening weeks of his competitive reign, the Dutchman says that he is still targeting a top four finish before building towards challenging for league and continental honours:

“I hope we shall succeed and that we are this year in the top four, because the Champions League suits a club like Manchester United.” He is quoted by Sky Sports.

“Then maybe the next step is to be champions and the next step after that is to be winner of the Champions League, but that needs time. A lot of clubs fight for many, many years and never succeed.”

Van Gaal went on to point at his unbeaten pre-season as proof that his 3-4-1-2 set-up and methods will work:

“I was a king in the United States, and now I am not a king any more? I am the same Louis van Gaal with the same philosophy, and I am very confident I shall succeed here.”
