Oh Shinji, perhaps it was just not meant to be.

The man who you always felt could become the player that Man United needed, the man who looked like the solution to all United’s midfield problems when he signed from Borussia Dortmund. But Kagawa proved no more than a tease for Manchester United fans.

A flick here, an assist there were enough to keep United fans hoping. His consistent exclusion first under Fergusson, and then Moyes, was a cause of constant frustration for United fans – how is Tom Cleverly playing and Kagawa didn’t even make the bench? And yet when he got his chance the Japanese playermaker more often then not disappointed.

Perhaps it’s best for both club and player that he’s set to rejoin BVB for £6.4m.
