Wright sees the end of Rooney at Manchester United

Although Manchester United maintain a healthy 12-point lead at the top the Premier League table, Tuesday night’s Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid has fans and players in heated debates about the club.

A questionable 56th-minute red card given to Nani was the turning point of Tuesday night’s match at Old Trafford. In the next 13 minutes, Real Madrid would strike twice one from Luka Modric and one from Christiano Ronaldo. The match would end 2-1 and Manchester United was eliminated from Champions League play.

However, some fans and presenters would argue manager Alex Ferguson made an even more controversial move made by two hours before game time, releasing a starting XI without striker Wayne Rooney. He would come on in the 73rd minute of the match, replacing Tom Cleverley, but he had little effect on the outcome

Many believe Ferguson’s choice to drop the striker in such an important match speaks volumes about his possible future at Old Trafford. Rooney lost his spot as the club’s leading striker last season to Robin Van Persie, and has appeared in 20 of 28 Premier League fixtures this season.
