Another striker

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is hoping he can see off competition from both Tottenham and West Ham to secure the signing of Loic Remy on a permanent transfer from QPR, according to the Daily Star.

The Frenchman fired Newcastle to a crucial victory over Cardiff City at the weekend, scoring both goals in the Magpies’ 2-1 win.

Pardew had previously attempted to sign Remy on a permanent deal last January, however he opted to join Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road – although he could not save QPR from relegation.

Redknapp said earlier in the week he would be happy to see Remy make his move to St James’ Park permanent at the end of the season, and he does not expect to see him make a return to the West London club.

However London duo Tottenham and West Ham are both keen to sign Remy too, although Pardew is desperate to ensure he stays in the North East.

“I wish he had joined in January,” Pardew said.

“I still remember the night clearly when we thought we had done the deal.

“We had a nice glass of wine, gave ourselves a nice, hearty, warm handshake and the next day he wasn’t there.

“But sometimes in life you have to wait. If you wait long enough it comes around.

“We are really pleased to have him, I thought he was excellent. Not just his two goals, but his work-rate and everything he did was competent.

“He is a player on our books and we are pleased to have him, but at the moment he is a QPR player.

“It was interesting to read Harry Redknapp’s comments that he probably won’t be going back, but we will have to see.”
