Newcastle have joined Everton in the race for Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell, according to MirrorFootball.

The 23-year-old looks set to finally end his Etihad nightmare this summer after making just seven Premier League starts since signing for the club forĀ£12million in 2012.

Rodwell has recently been linked with a return to Goodison Park, where he began his career as an academy product, and saw a January return cancelled by City at the last minute due to the club’s failure to sign Porto’s Fernando.

But the Toffees now face competition from Newcastle as Alan Pardew looks to rebuild his squad after being told his St. James’ Park job is safe.

Rodwell is eager to revive his career after a frustrating two years in Manchester and hopes to add to his three England caps by seeking regular first-team football elsewhere.
