Newcastle United are targeting Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey after his amazing half-field volley against Aston Villa, Mirror reports.

Current Magpies boss Alan Pardew gave Shelvey his professional debut four years ago and is now targeting his former England U-21 star.

Pardew has also insisted that continuing as Newcastle boss does not rely on the club’s final league position as he plans to add Shelvey to his ranks next season.

The 22-year-old scored one of the goals of the season, when he spotted Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan off his line to volley in a half-line effort.

Newcastle’s net expenditure on transfers is the Premier League’s lowest over the last five years, but with a £45million profit, it means they have the funds available to rebuild next season.

With the money garnered from the sale of Frenchman Yohan Cabaye, Pardew wants to bring in Shelvey to replace their former midfield playmaker.

Sunderland’s Jack Colback has also been muted as a target for Pardew, with the club looking to balance their foreign squad with English players.

Newcastle will face Arsenal at the Emirates in this weekend’s last Premier League fixture tonight.
