Newcastle defender Danny SimpsonFulham, QPR and West Ham are set to battle for the signature of Newcastle right-back Danny Simpson, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The 26-year-old is thought to be surplus to requirements at St James’ Park, following the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Lille, and could be allowed to leave this January.

West Ham are rumoured to be leading the race for his signature, with manager Sam Allardyce being a long-term admirer of the ex-Manchester United man.

However, he may face competition from Fulham, who are keen to strengthen their defensive options, and QPR, who are looking to spend in order to avoid relegation.

A potential stumbling block could be Simpson’s current injury status. The full-back suffered a broken toe in the Magpies’ 7-3 defeat against Arsenal, and is not expected to return to first-team action until late January at the earliest.

Simpson was consistent performer under Alan Pardew last term as Newcastle secured qualification for the Europa League.

But, the club are believed to be willing to allow him to leave after an underwhelming start to the new campaign.

we need back up in case debucy is injured.
it is sensible to retain him until the end of season when his contract expires.if there are three premiership clubs after him surely he cannot be that bad. the 2 million price tag is worth losing because knowing the almighty he will not pay for a back up to debucy.any way why am i worrying if nextseason we will be playing in the championship and the wholefrench contingent will move to new pastures

No idea why Fulham are linked. We already have 2 right backs. Riether has been outstanding this season and hopefully we can make his loan permanent. We’ve also got Kelly as back-up. Newcastle should keep him as back-up.

That leaves the Hammers as he will not join Redknapp and his losers.

I echo t proctor – for too long NUFC have tried to have a very strong 1st 16 and then nothing in reserve ‘cept for kids & cripples – it’s time that the mgmnt realised we need to keep players like Simpson as back up until we have something better – Debuchy could easily pull up with an injury and we would (as have a lot of our recent big signings) and we would be left havingto use kids again – it’s worth far more havingSimpson as back up and staying in the Prem than floggin him for cheap now and then getting caught short
