Newcastle close to clinching deal for Frenchman
The Magpies have already raided Ligue 1 to sign Lille full back Mathieu Debuchy and are now closing in on French under-21 international Haidara, who was also linked with a move to Roma.
Alan Pardew made strengthening his defence a top New Year priority and news that the club have had an undisclosed bid – thought to be in the region of €3.5 million – accepted for the 20-year-old will come as a relief to supporters after a difficult winter period.
Haidara recently indicated his desire to move to the Premier League and will now get his chance provided he passes a medical at St James’ Park.
“Newcastle do appeal to me, but everyone has to agree,” he said.
“I would be very happy to play there. My preference is England. It is the league which attracts me the most and would suit my game the best.”
Haidara will provide direct competition for Newcastle’s current first choice left back Davide Santon and could be joined on Tyneside by Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, with the club putting the finishing touches on a £7m deal for the defender.
