Newcastle have made an offer for Valenciennes left-back Gaetan Bong, according to the club’s president.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew is believed to be keen to bring in defensive options during January, after watching his side make a poor start to the Premier League season.

The St James’ Park-based team have shipped 39 goals in 21 games this term, with injuries to a number of important defensive players, including Fabricio Collocini and Steven Taylor, exposing a lack of depth in their squad.

Pardew has moved to address this issue by bringing in right-back Mathieu Debuchy from Lille, and he has now set his sight on another Ligue 1 star in the shape of Bong.

Valenciennes president Jean-Raymond Legrand has revealed that a bid has been made by Newcastle, but a deal will only be concluded if the French side can find a replacement:

“Newcastle are very interested, they have made an offer.” He told le10sport.com.

“We will wait and see. But I will not sell players unless I can replace them.”

The 24-year-old has made 12 appearances in the French top flight this term helping his team into sixth position.

Although Bong is likely to be brought in as cover for first-choice Davide Santon, he may become a regular starter, with the Italian attracting the interest of AC Milan.
